We at SourAPPLE feel that within the film industry there are a lack of venues for the art of the truly independent film.  Untethered from the big-money Hollywood machine, indie films are a trial by fire testing ground for both beginning and experienced filmmakers.  Unhindered by burgeoning budgets and committees of fiscally-minded “entertainment experts,” artists are allowed a level of creative control almost nonexistent in the world of larger studio pictures.  Small budgets, lack of resources, and tiny crews mean that the filmmaker must push for innovation and experimentation, and whose results accomplish what the best movies do: to escape the banal, to surprise and inspire, and ultimately to reaffirm our own human experience.

SourAPPLE curates and coordinates two annual festivals in Portland, the 10 or Less Film Festival (a.k.a. 10 Fest, a festival of short films) and the Portland Women’s Film Festival (a.k.a. POW Fest, a showcase of women-made movies), in partnership with Film Action Oregon
